Data Acquistion
Reliable data acquisition products that withstand aggressive environmental conditions in oil and gas production are crucial. Engineers and OEMs are challenged with developing tools capable of operating in high temperatures and well depths greater than 4,500 meters.
VICTREX® PEEK™ polymers in certain applications are capable of replacing more expensive traditional materials such as glass, ceramics or metal composites because they maintain their mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance properties over a wide spectrum of usage conditions when compared to other polymers.
Electrical Connectors
These components are used to transmit critical data measurements and equipment control signals during drilling and production operations in extreme depths and pressures. Due to the associated tight physical constraints in downhole environments, connectors are also required to have the smallest possible footprint while maintaining reliable performance.
Electrically-insulating VICTREX PEEK polymers provide the chemical resistance necessary to protect signals in these high temperatures. Void-free connectors completely isolate the conductive pins to assure reliable performance.
Potential benefits of using VICTREX PEEK polymers:- Maintain exceptional mechanical strength, chemical resistance and consistent tribological properties throughout operating temperature ranges
- Insulate connectors running at temperatures of up to 200°C (392°F) and at a differential pressure of 20,000 psi without suffering from extrusion or loss of electrical properties
- Simpler to assemble than traditional materials such as glass, ceramics or metal composites
Data Logging
A full understanding of the static and dynamic conditions of the subsurface reservoir requires precise measurements to fully characterize the earth model. As downhole conditions become more challenging, a new generation of logging technology is being deployed to generate crisp, high resolution images from the wellbore.
VICTREX PEEK polymers provide a unique combination of abrasion and chemical resistance and mechanical strength throughout their operating temperature range. They also offer consistent electrical properties to retain the integrity of the data being captured while providing minimal electrical interference.
Specific application areas to incorporate VICTREX PEEK include MWD, LWD, and open wellbore data logging tools such as acoustic scanning tools, gamma ray tools, and oil mud imaging tools.
Benefits of using VICTREX PEEK polymers can include:- Safely replaces metals for the housing of sensitive electronics
- Transparent to certain wavelengths of radar
- Wear and chemical resistance to ensure efficiency and accuracy
Cables and Wireline
The next generation of cables needed to collect, retain, and transmit the high-resolution images gathered by data logging technology require the highest performing materials.
VICTREX PEEK polymers offer consistent electrical insulation properties, and chemical, abrasion and high temperature resistance while maintaining mechanical integrity.
Victrex polymers are used as a primary and/or a secondary jacketing material for various cable applications from ESP power cables to perforating detonation cables. In addition, VICTREX PEEK can be applied as an extrusion or as a film wrap to achieve the desired cable jacket depending on the preferred in-house manufacturing process.
Benefits of using VICTREX PEEK polymers can include:- Allows cable manufacturers the design flexibility to achieve increasing performance demands, while maintaining the basic electrical properties required of jacketing materials
- With the use of VICTREX PEEK as a polymeric protective layer, durable corrosion resistant electric cables yield increased lifetime, and could be extended to a versatile multi-use cable
Downhole Sensors
Accurate and reliable downhole data is essential in the oil and gas industry. Drilling operations demand real-time data. Production operations rely on a wide variety of downhole data to optimize production, minimize downtime, and maximize ultimate reservoir recovery.
Sensors require complete encapsulation for use in oil and gas downhole operations. Temperatures up to 200°C (392°F) in the presence of H2S, CO2, methane, salt water and crude oil are common. VICTREX PEEK polymers have a continuous use temperature of up to 260°C (500°F), and provide a unique combination of chemical and permeation resistance, mechanical and tribological properties.
VICTREX PEEK polymers make it possible to engineer downhole sensors with enhanced function and significantly reduced permeability to chemical species of the assembly.
Benefits of using VICTREX PEEK polymers in downhole sensors:- Assurance of accurate, real-time data capture and delivery
- Product reliability in extreme conditions
- Complete encapsulation to protect electronic devices
